Although
I tease students that math is more important than language arts, I am an avid
reader and encourage students to read every day. The students in my
homeroom will begin each and every day with a time for them to read
whatever "Good Fit" book they would like. I have an extensive collection of books
in my classroom library and am always thrilled to receive donations of new or
gently used books to add to my shelves.
Parents, and students, are always on the prowl for a good book. I tell kids that the best way to find a good book is to ask a friend, or Mrs. Mishler!! There are several web sites that can be perused:
American Library Association: This web site lists, among other things, books that have received the Newbery Award and the Caldecott Medal. The Caldecott Medal is awarded for the illustrations in a book, so they are usually young reader books, but they are usually delightful to read: even an adult appreciates good illustrations!
Scholastic: Scholastic offers very good prices to families and I will get credit if you use my teacher number when making an on-line purchase. (More information to follow- this section is still under construction.)
Zip-Books: What are Zip Books? If the Library does not own a title you'd like to read/listen to, and if that title is available on Amazon.com, we will not only order it, but ship it to your address at no charge. Read it and return it to us and place your next Zip Books Request.
Placer County Libraries: The public library has thousands of books for all ages. Even if you live in Loomis, you can go to the public library in other towns: if you haven't been to the new library on Granite Drive in Rocklin, you really need to check it out. Besides the books you can check out, they also have numerous e-books that you can check out. I have checked out a couple of e-books and it is quite convenient.
Amazon: If you own a Kindle, there are thousands of books that can be borrowed for little or no cost.
